
California's Resilience Fund: A Lifeline for Independent Restaurants
The California Restaurant Foundation (CRF) has once again shown its unwavering support for the state's dining scene by awarding $5,000 grants to over 200 independent restaurants and caterers. This marks the fifth consecutive year of the Restaurants Care® Resilience Fund, a program designed to bolster local businesses facing ongoing financial challenges.
Alycia Harshfield, President of CRF, notes that this initiative has evolved into a vital lifeline, stating, “These grants help independent operators care for their teams and invest in a future they believe in.” Indeed, as the restaurant industry continues to recover from the pandemic's economic impact, many owners still find themselves navigating rising food costs and workforce shortages.

Among the 231 recipients of the grants, 188 operate within the Pacific Gas and Electric service area, while 43 hail from SoCalGas’ territory. Most of these establishments are single-unit operations, with many in business for an average of 11 years. The funding is particularly aimed at enhancing kitchen equipment and implementing tech upgrades, ensuring that these restaurants not only survive but thrive in a competitive landscape.

Take Bayside Café in Morro Bay, for example; owner Dawn Borst has cultivated a loyal community around her passion for culinary delights. She expressed gratitude for the grant, noting that it would help her make vital equipment upgrades and introduce exciting new offerings, including a homemade dessert menu.
